Have you ever wondered why you have a favourite colour? Is there something good or bad about colours?

Life itself is painted in many hues, such as red, yellow, blue, among many others...

Have you ever stopped for a moment to appreciate how everything you see is so full of colour, life full of so many nuances that the fact of existing day by day is just like a beautiful piece of art. There are multiple emotions found in just the fact of seeing that we live in a universe full of colour.

And it's curious. We are so used to seeing them around us that we don't even think about the psychological effects it can create in us, for example, it is not the same to see the beautiful light blue colour in the bright sky during the day than to see the sky with yellow and orange tones at sunset, because internally it creates an emotional effect, in some people stronger than in others, however, it continues to cause something that even without realizing it, it can relax our body and mind, since it has a certain cognitive nature.

Now it is time to briefly explain the cognitive part that allows us to appreciate colours, it is important to highlight the following:

1.- When light hits the retina (a light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye), special cells known as photoreceptors convert the light into electrical signals.

2.- These electrical signals travel from the retina through the optic nerve to the brain. The brain then converts the signals into the images we see.

Within the human brain, there are about 30 visual areas located in the occipital, parietal, temporal, and frontal lobes of the cerebral cortex. Each area extracts different types of information from the visual input signal; from the most elementary features such as spatial frequency, orientation and contrast (areas of the occipital lobe), to the most complex features such as movement, colour or shape of objects (characteristic of the parietal temporal and frontal regions of the cerebral cortex). However, the Occipital lobe is primarily responsible for vision management, since vision is processed and interpreted here, and thus allows the formation of visual memories.

The act of observing a colour is something more than a physiological process. It also has an emotional potential, very high or very low, depending on who you ask, since each colour means something in particular to each person. For example, indeed, colours are also used as symbols of social movements, and it's so interesting because the culture of the place where we live can also be influenced by this, and that's why is it so important to pay attention to the colours we select in our lives, because they can make us feel comfortable or uncomfortable, happy or sad, they can even make us feel hungry.

It's something extraordinary to know how all the cognitive processes of our being are so connected to something that seems so easy and common when in reality it's much more complex than we can even imagine. In other words, the reason that seeing the sunrise is something so impressive to the naked eye involves a mental, perceptual and emotional process, so when we see different shades of colours above us, the brain undoubtedly acts like an artist.

Part of today's reality is living in a world where we are already used to everything that is around us, which is an interesting subject to reflect on by the way, because thinking about why human beings get used to everything where they live, and then otherwise, it loses some of its spark, its emotion, or its colour, in what made it ignite in the first place; but I will talk about that another time, the purpose of mentioning this topic is that you have to take time to appreciate where we are and what is around us.

Or can you imagine a life with no colour?...

...I mean I kind of like the idea, but not that much, in any case, it would be strange...

It would be like leaving the music on, and not paying attention to it, and I am not saying that we must observe life like this every day, with too much attention and passion, that could be exhausting. I do understand that life cannot always be like this, however, the appreciation of everything where we live can give us a healthier and more creative quality of life, because it gives us important things, as well as the self-knowledge that comes to you thanks to therapy, only that in these cases, we talk about knowing your environment and how you act according to it. Which in my opinion is something very important, because in this way, we appreciate how valuable life can be, you just have to close your eyes for a moment, count to ten and then open them again, and then you will notice for sure an important part of that difference in your environment.

I want to mention an example of the impact of colours in your mind, I mean the different species of flowers that exist, from Roses, Sunflowers, Lilies, Forget-me-nots or Daisies, among many others, which leave a particular effect on us, is, in fact, a way of demonstrating how the sensitivity of our nervous system is highly sensitive, although we do not realize it.

    Now, slightly changing the subject...

I need to mention how marketing, emotions & cultures, are ways in which humans have used colours to symbolize and sometimes attract people.

To clarify a bit more, I want to talk with examples of some brands, for example, "Facebook", they chose those colours in their logo and in their platform, by the way, with those whites and those shades of blue, you can be easily relaxed. Your eyes start to feel comfortable, so there is no reason, visually speaking, to not continue watching videos on your phone, or for example, the McDonald's brand logo, using red, a colour that produces strong emotions, and yellow, a colour that can produce hunger.

    To mention a few brands...

In fact, colour has a special effect, therefore, not all of them have the same effects, although, in a certain way, we are indeed part of some of those psychological effects.

Throughout history, colours have been used in many ways, from the symbol of a logo of any brand to a social and cultural representation of everything we go to, and in everything we do.

For example, we all hear that classic stereotype that the colour blue is for boys and pink is for girls, this is an idea that was created many years ago, when actually there was a time in history when children were dressed in white cotton, regardless the gender of the child, nevertheless, there was a period in time when the situation was quite the opposite because the boys wore pink and the girls wore blue.

A long time ago, (between the XV and XVI centuries), Western European culture began to develop a rich artistic and cultural production. And it was during this time that the colour blue was identified with purity, a soft and delicate colour that could be more easily related to the feminine role. Meanwhile, pink, derived from red, represented strength and masculine determination. And so, pink was a colour associated with masculinity, considered to be a watery red colour, related to blood. Hence, its use was "advised" in boys and not in girls in the USA.

In short, the social impact that we can give a colour is very strong, like the colour red, which is used when one is wrong, and green, which is used when one is right. And so, it is shown that colours have an effect on our life that is structured by the culture where we grew up, as well as the knowledge we have of life and what we believe in it.

And then, why do we have a favourite colour?...

The answer is actually subjective since it is something that involves our emotions and consequently, our neural connections.

However, our personal histories and subjective experiences condition us when it comes to feeling a preference for one colour or another. Here the great weight of the media and advertising stands out. But sometimes, it is enough to have an experience of great emotional intensity for our mind to feel a preference for a colour. Therefore it involves a profound and personal reason.

So basically, colours have completely changed our lives, emotionally speaking of course, so there is no doubt how much all this makes sense when I see the sky every day and it makes me feel like I'm floating, with no a doubt it's something so profound and emotional that it feels like poetry inside you.

As it can be distinguished, we live surrounded by a world full of colours, without which life itself would not make sense.

Oh emotions, those incredible representations of ourselves, sometimes we can go down with them, and sometimes we get up, but no matter where we go, we can't escape of what we feel. And, wait a minute... the sky seems too amazing right now😱😱😱, what's happening inside of me that produce this sensation? Does it have a name?...

Each of our emotions has its own nuance, its own tone, which makes them stand out from the others, at a certain moment, therefore when they invade your being it is an extraordinary and particular process, they can even make us act impulsively. Now, I wonder: What happens inside us when we let ourselves be invaded by one of these reactions? Is it so terrible to act according to what you feel?

Emotions directly impact brain activity, specifically in the limbic system, which is a neural network in charge of processing emotions, which is complemented by other parts of the brain such as the hypothalamus and the hippocampus. The hypothalamus is in charge of releasing all the hormones necessary to feel emotions, in this way you know what it feels like to be sad, happy, angry, afraid, etc. While the hippocampus controls the mental processes related to memory, and with the memories of situations that generate particular emotion in us, in this way we can remember and memorize the most transcendental experiences of our existence, those that will later influence our way of acting.

In the same way, the amygdala is also part of this process and of the limbic system, since it is linked to the emotional response that the experienced situations arouse. The amygdala is the main control nucleus of emotions and feelings in the brain, also controlling the responses of satisfaction or fear. It is a complex structure, being an almond-shaped structure located in the limbic system of the brain.

On the other hand, the orbitofrontal cortex, which sends emotional orders to the frontal lobe, is in charge of planning our actions once we receive an emotional impulse. However, this is not his most important role, but he also assumes the responsibility of stopping the irrational impulses that human beings sometimes regret.

So let me tell you I've been doing some research about this subject, and I found something really interesting, and it's that Psychologist Robert Plutchik developed one of the most popular emotion wheels, known as the Plutchik wheel.

He suggested that people experience eight core emotions, which he arranged in opposite pairs on the wheel:

    - Sadness and Joy
    - Anger and Fear
    - Expectation and Surprise
    - Acceptance and Disgust

According to his theory, these basic emotions can intensify, become milder, or even combine to produce any emotional state. This is just one of multiple theories that exist on the subject of emotions, however it seemed important to explain this one, since it briefly highlights what seems to me to be the most essential on the subject.

Isn't it extraordinary? Realizing how much happens inside us just by constantly feeling the taste of emotions in your life, after all, what would life be without feeling emotions? An empty life without nuances.

And then, is it bad to act according to your emotions? I will answer that thanks to my experience, and it is that most of my life I've made important decisions guided by what my emotions say, while behind all that there is a genuinely personal reason, whether it is moving to another place just because you are Sad, not seeing a person again because you feel fear in your veins, or a very clear example, when you get angry and you are arguing with someone else, suddenly you can say something unintentional, but always ends up hurting the other person, highlighting that emotions have a voice in each of us.

For example, I don't watch horror movies, because I know I'll be very terrified, and that emotion allows me to identify and create who I am, because emotions are part of everyone's life, they are that essential part of every day that can get to inspire, and at the same time create great memories of the adventures from our whole incredible existence.

If you are someone who has tried to control their emotions, I would recommend that you not do it, and I would just let the emotions enter me, and express them, there are multiple ways to express emotions, some of my favorites are music and theater. However, it depends on each case. I would recommend you keep a dairy or maybe tell your situation to a truly close friend, or even better, take psychological therapy to clarify that part of you.

And don't forget, it's a human thing to be emotional in this life.

Thank you for getting this far, and remember, if you have any additional comments...

    I'm all ears.😊👂🏻

Today's society lives under constant digital communication, which has helped people communicate regardless of distance, however it also brings adverse consequences, something that we do not distinguish so easily because it has become part of current nature, it has been known as: "The Culture of immediacy

Psychology knows it as "Instant gratification", which is the desire to experience pleasure or satisfaction without any kind of delay or postponement. In this way, society has become more impatient, the idea of waiting in life is fading and this produces consequences in our social and psychological life. Why do we want everything to be faster?

Throughout my whole life I have had many stories, memories, of course like everyone, this is important to mention because part of the life that we want to remember or express is what ends up being in these media and I consider that the way we live now, It is more painful than we can imagine, sometimes it is enough to take your digital devices and remove them from your life for 1 day, you will immediately realize the enormous difference that exists in that day. There is a feeling of anxiety, as if you were missing something, because there is that constant in your life, of being "reachable, or locating someone".

Most of the time, even needs that we did not have before are created, and that is where an algorithm like the one in social networks makes contact with us, granting us a photo or video that we did not know existed, just as long as we stay active longer, when one can think "Why am I seeing the photo of a person sunbathing on the beaches of Cancún?", It is curious, because the fact of using our time has become something so easy from manipulating and at the same time something so self-destructive, our life went largely to a digital universe.

Don't get me wrong, all this has its good points, I personally am also part of this virtual universe, which is why I also have social media and I have also spent hours watching videos, without thinking about the hours that I am leaving there, it is even very useful fact of finding things that you did not know existed, because you can discover activities, courses, etc..., new things in life where you can focus your attention and it can become a benefit in your life.

You know, in fact I did the experiment with myself, I decided to take my cell phone and put it away from me, and immediately the need to search for information about the "Lupin" series in Google came to my head, this need to search for something is created, constantly, and well, we just have to use our cell phone, without thinking twice. I remember a teacher I had in my High School once told me that we live in "The Information Age" and everything you want to search for is at your fingertips.

So, when I felt a slight concern to look for information and my phone was far away, then I began to ask myself questions: What if I received a new message? Have I already listened to the latest music from Birdy? I did that and the other one?, Will I have received an email?, etc...; In a few words, I began to ask myself questions about needs that have come true thanks to this new digital era, let's say that an easy window of opportunities is created, which, don't get me wrong, is great, but it also has its disadvantages because now my time it goes into new digital needs, you know the classic on YouTube of "I'm just going to see this video and that's it", but in the end that video becomes "videos" or even a movie that you didn't know existed, but I caught your attention, Haha there is even an option on YouTube called "Watch Later", specifically to create a list of everything that according to your mind you will be able to well watch later, it's ironic.

And we cannot forget the update that practically all the social networks received, or in any case the majority, of course I refer to the one that appears on our devices as "Stories", which is usually video or a photo, which is published and lasts 24 hours, there A lot of time is usually consumed, anyway, and after 2019, the year in which COVID came to interrupt what we call "life", well, in that period a short video format began to be used, or also called clips, the important thing It is that it has become part of the daily life of many people today and in summary, I could say that there are good things and bad things about all of this that we are currently seeing.

    - And so, I consider that the use of these devices can also grant certain benefits, such as:

    • These allow us to communicate around the world.
    • It allows us to share the different cultures around the whole world.
    • We get new job opportunities
    • New academic and learning opportunities are presented
    • Reduces the use of sheets of paper
    • Among others...

In my opinion, it is a very interesting topic to talk about, because putting aside the fact that having these new technologies helps us, we must also be aware of how such an important characteristic as patience has been massively exhausted in the new generation, which creates despair, anxiety, depression, etc...

In fact, something that has caught my attention lately is that the music we listen to, as well as the artistic world, is aware of this phenomenon, therefore the idea of making things shorter and simpler became stronger, and in my opinion, for something to become faster and shorter is a form of emotional self-destruction, and life has never served like that.

A very beautiful example of how life works and how slowly it can be, is to see how a plant grows and flourishes, of course, you have to take care of it, and be in constant movement so that it does not die, in the same way, when we throw our mind on something so simple, our brain begins to feel impatience, without realizing it, but if we put together all that amount of, let's say "short-lived products," it creates a great emotional drain.

I mean... just think of it this way, I can see something that is going to take 1 or 2 minutes, no problem, but after a while, if the content of this is very entertaining, 2 minutes becomes 2 hours, and of course, we can control this, one way would be to be specific in what we want to look for and do with these tools, but it is true that it exists a great susceptibility to do this, because of how easy it is to just take your phone and open your eyes to this digital universe.

And what do you think? Is Immediacy real or not? Should we blame phones? Can it be controlled?

I gladly listen to your comments.

Have you ever analysed everything that your brain consciously maintains during a single day?

Or maybe you just lose yourself in time, surprising yourself by noticing that your day went by, and you didn't do what you wanted to do?

And of course, the classic, thinking about your to do list for today, and then something else comes to your mind. That cooking recipe that you were hoping so passionately to make this Friday afternoon, ended up being watching a series on Netflix, or watching a tutorial on You Tube...

Well, today I come here to tell you that it is not your fault, the reality is that human beings have learned to underestimate a matter as important as Attention.

You know, I often wonder if there is an emotional reason of why we act in this way or if it is simply an automatic effect of our brain together with our wonderful neurons, which leads me first to describe a little more about what attention is and its classification.

Attention is one of the most important characteristics of the human coefficient, because we could not retain and process all the information that is around us if we did not have it. Attention could be defined as a state of observation and alertness, which allows us to generate, select, direct and maintain an adequate level of activation for relevant information.

In other words, attention is a process that takes place at the cognitive level, which allows us to orient ourselves towards those stimuli that are relevant, discriminating against everything that does not interest us.

So, there are multiple types of attention, but here I comment on the best known:

    - Internal attention: That ability to pay attention to one's own mental processes or other interoceptive aspects.

    - External attention: attention captured by external stimuli and from the environment.

    - Open attention: it is accompanied by motor responses that support and facilitate the act of attending, for example, directing the head towards the stimulus that we want to attend to.

    - Covert attention: allows attention to stimuli without the appearance that the act is being carried out.

    - Selective attention or focused attention: ability to select and focus attention on a single stimulus, discarding other irrelevant ones that may interfere with
      process.

    - Divided attention: ability to focus attention on two or more tasks at the same time. For example, driving and listening to music at the same time.

    - Sustained attention: ability to maintain attention over time and respond appropriately.

    - Visual attention: ability to attend to the stimuli that are presented in our field of vision. It is related to spatial aspects.

    - Auditory attention: ability to attend to stimuli perceived through the ear. It is related to temporary parameters.

And well, it seems extremely important to me to become aware of our actions, more than anything, to work on all those thoughts, you know those enormous 60,000, that according to different studies we have throughout our day, of which 95% arise from automatically, being similar on consecutive days.

Now, personally speaking, this idea of regulating time to what interests us seems very important, organizing our tasks and at the same time our brain, which is frequently multitasking.

In fact, all you have to do is search on Google if you want to know tips to improve your attention, there are multiple activities from games like sudoku, one of my favorites, dominoes, chess, or even things as simple but important as listening to music, sleeping well, which by the way, is something elementary for regulating our attention, as well as doing physical exercise, or if you like a sport, practicing it, it also helps to constantly drink water, among many others..., you just have to find the method that best suits your lifestyle.

Currently there is a cognitive practice or technique known as "Mindfulness", which could be defined as: Consciously paying attention to the experience of the present moment with interest, curiosity and acceptance. Which in therapy is very useful since it helps to create greater self-knowledge in the patient, giving him a healthier life.

It is true that our thoughts are part of our "mental map" that, together with the beliefs, values, rules, and the meaning that we attribute to the different experiences throughout life, all constitute what makes us unique, different, and that determine our way of perceiving the world. And it's fascinating, isn't it? How suddenly you do activities, articulate movements unconsciously, like when you go to drink a glass of water, your own body's attention is focused on the weight of the glass and the movement of the hand, without However, it has become so natural that we do not always pay the same attention to it as when we read a book, for example, it is probably due to the fact that it is not something from which we have nothing to learn, and learning or the simple fact of obtaining something new to our lives is what brings about that genuine level of care

Let's speak with empathy for a while, because it is important to say that the interpretation of things will never be the same for any person, therefore something that can be unpleasant and very stressful; for others, on the other hand, it can be a challenge and the stress inherent to it, as an engine to overcome it. For example: public speaking, working in an emergency service, high-impact sports competitions, extreme sports... among many others. Each of these activities represents something different for each of us, at the same time that the attention we put into it creates a different result and it is totally valid, it is part of the beauty of living in a world full of so many possibilities.

And what do you think, do you have any comments?
